Built for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exhibition as a temporary indoor structure for the display of food products. Mostly in original form, the materials and labor are likely both from Japan. Originally designed to represent a Buddhist’s “treasure tower.”
When the pagoda was moved to the Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park in 2016 the metal roof was converted to wood shingles.
The renovation of 2022 includes bells and giboshi ordered from Morikuni in Niigata.
The surrounding landscape was redesigned by Hoichi Kurisu’, and the stone based was created by Matsushita Stone Company from Takasago, both in 2024.

The Japanese Tea Garden is open year round.
